I was raised by a family of hardworking, loving, and passionate parents, who’ve spent their entire careers in education. Growing up in Sacramento, California I was taught to give back to the community whenever possible — sometimes that meant volunteering at the local soup kitchen, other times that meant coaching little league soccer.
After obtaining an MSW in Nonprofit Management, my desire to help our communities grew even stronger, and started to revolve around healthier choices. I started my career in San Diego developing programs for military fathers with kids, 0 – 5 years old. Soon after, I started cooking quite a bit. The more I cooked, the more I learned about what I was eating and I soon realized how scary the food system really is. Around the same time, the obesity epidemic hit mainstream America, and I then transitioned to food policy. Five years later, my wife and I decided to move to London to explore Europe and learn more about how their food system worked. I dove right in, working with Slow Food, Sustain, numerous city farms and Healthy Planet UK. Throughout, I was brainstorming ways to make a difference in the US food system.
After exploring food systems in other countries, devouring research, going to conferences and peppering experts with questions, it is quite obvious how broken our food system is — from kids getting adult diseases to questionable ingredients to unbalanced farm subsidies to obesity. However, there is so much potential for us to fix this. As a result, my life’s passion personally and professionally is to help improve our food system.
After some seed funding from Healthy Planet UK, I started Healthy Planet USA, dedicated to inspiring a new generation of conscious eaters.
Outside of Healthy Planet, you can find me spending time with my family, on the soccer field, or in the kitchen testing new recipes on my always-forgiving wife.
