San Marcos Elementary understands the educational benefits of having a school garden — that when integrated with the curriculum, it can broaden the mindset of the students. To turn this idea into reality, the teachers, parents, students, and Healthy Planet got together to build a beautiful school garden. The Dig Day was held on October 29th, 2016. Throughout the day, the teachers discussed the many benefits of integrating garden-based learning into lesson plans for the students.
While the students are excited about the fact that their classrooms now extend beyond the walls of the school building, the parents hope that the kids understand the core idea behind this initiative – which is healthy eating. The collective efforts of the Healthy Planet team and the school have resulted in building a beautiful garden that’s ready to reconnect the students with the natural world and real source of their food.
