Healthy Growing

When kids grow vegetables they eat vegetables. It’s that simple.

Our Healthy Growing program does more than just put gardens into PreK – High Schools

With community engagement at its core, we create comprehensive school garden programs — educating, inspiring and providing integrated hands-on learning for students. Our Healthy Growing gardens bring teachers, students, parents and local businesses together around a common goal. The result is a sustainable school garden, a more connected, nutritionally educated community and a new generation of children who not only understand the difference between a potato and a French fry, but also sometimes choose the potato over the French fry.

Kids are curious and smart. They want to learn. And with each successful garden, we’re able to educate the next generation of conscious eaters through hands-on work in the garden and our integrated curriculum teaching nutrition, food history, and the impact food has on their personal health and the health of the planet. We want children to not only understand what they’re eating, but where their food comes from and how it’s made. Our goal is to inspire our nation’s children to play a transformative role in changing today’s food system, literally from the ground up.

The easy part is building the garden. The hard part is figuring out what to do with it, how to pay for it, and how to ensure it’s around for awhile.

We help with all of that, from planning with the PTA, to sourcing and delivering your materials, to our all-inclusive Dig Day, our goal is to ensure the long-term success of your school garden. However, we know that many schools are at different stages of their garden programs and require different needs. As a result, we have 3 different program options to choose from:

The Consultation: Access to curriculum & consultation to make your garden program work for your specific school. Learn more here.

The Kit: Includes all the necessary materials, curriculum, and guides for you to build, incorporate, and maintain a garden in your school community. Learn more here.

The Comprehensive: 9+ months of 1-on-1 customized support and guidance for your school to help you start a brand new garden, jump start a garden that has been forgotten, or expand an existing garden. This includes a Field Coordinator, Site Visits, program planning, fundraising help, individual garden design, delivery of all materials, follow up for the first year of your garden, curriculum, etc. Learn more here.

School gardens with support from the community are more sustainable.

This premise is a core component of our programs, so we aim to engage and empower the community throughout the whole process.

Together we’re strengthening our communities one school garden at a time.

As young kids, we’re all creative. Our imaginations run wild. Yet at some point, some of us lose those creative instincts, which are the core component of innovation. It’s what drives new ideas and solutions to our world’s largest obstacles. Our next generation of big thinkers, inventors and innovators are in your local schools.

One of the aims of Healthy Growing is to nurture that creativity before it disappears, and inspire young people to not only continue practicing that creativity, but also learn to hone those skills and use them in a real-life setting.

The Healthy Growing Enterprise Project — included in the curriculum and the Kit option, and often part of the Comprehensive option — was developed to nurture that creativity and inspire our students to innovate. Students learn to think big, plan and implement their own business-minded project, and earn money to help sustain the garden.

With Healthy Growing, kids don’t just hear about growing vegetables, cooking food, and designing a business – they do it!
