February is the quiet before the storm in the small-scale farming world, but in the gardening world this is just another month to slowly prepare for the busy reality of spring and summer. A few things to keep in mind in this cold winter weather:
- February is the last chance to buy bare-root plants. Plant them now, or wait a bit until the soil is ready for planting.
- Finish all your winter pruning of fruit trees and dormant plants. Warmer weather will encourage them to grow rapidly, so be prepared!
- If you haven?t already, prepare your garden beds for new plants. Add compost or manure to replenish nutrients and boost the soil?s tilth.
