February Gardening Tips

February is the quiet before the storm in the small-scale farming world, but in the gardening world this is just another month to slowly prepare for the busy reality of spring and summer. A few things to keep in mind in this cold winter weather:

  1. February is the last chance to buy bare-root plants. Plant them now, or wait a bit until the soil is ready for planting.
  2. Finish all your winter pruning of fruit trees and dormant plants. Warmer weather will encourage them to grow rapidly, so be prepared!
  3. If you haven’t already, prepare your garden beds for new plants. Add compost or manure to replenish nutrients and boost the soil’s tilth.
